Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Nollywood, Nigeria’s film industry, has become a significant part of the global film scene, producing films that address a wide range of cultural, social, and political issues. These films, particularly those depicting Nigerian culture, have the potential to influence public perceptions and shape the understanding of cultural values, traditions, and practices. In Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, where cultural heritage plays a vital role in the community’s identity, Nollywood films have become a powerful force in shaping youth perceptions of Nigerian culture (Abubakar & Idris, 2023).

Despite its impact, the question of how Nollywood affects the perception of Nigerian culture, especially among the youth, remains largely unexplored in Akwanga. This study aims to investigate how Nollywood films influence the way young people view and engage with their culture, with a focus on how traditional values are portrayed and perceived.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The rapid rise of Nollywood films has sparked debate over whether these films adequately represent Nigerian culture or promote foreign cultural ideals. 3. How do Nollywood films influence youth engagement with cultural heritage and traditional practices?

1.5 Research Hypothesis

  1. Nollywood films positively influence youth perceptions of Nigerian culture in Akwanga.
  2. The portrayal of Nigerian culture in Nollywood films contributes to increased cultural pride and identity among the youth in Akwanga.
  3. Exposure to Nollywood films promotes the preservation and practice of traditional Nigerian values among youth in Akwanga.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will contribute to understanding the role of Nollywood films in shaping youth perceptions of culture, highlighting the importance of the film industry in promoting cultural heritage. The findings will be beneficial for filmmakers, educators, and policymakers seeking to preserve and promote Nigerian cultural values.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the youth population in Akwanga Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, and their interaction with Nollywood films. Limitations include challenges in obtaining a representative sample of youth, and the diverse interpretations of culture among different individuals.
